The Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG), through its Departamento de Estudios, provides structured databases and visualizations derived from administrative records of residence permits. These data cover Temporary and Permanent Residences that have been granted, as well as Refugee status applications (formalized, approved, or rejected) from the year 2000 through the end of each reporting period.
These databases constitute inputs that provide transparency regarding the results of SERMIG’s migration management, at the level of aggregated statistics. For accurate interpretation, the following considerations apply:
Due to their origin, the published data do not represent the regular or irregular foreign population in Chile, since what is reported corresponds to residence permits and not to individuals.
To learn about the number of foreign residents in Chile and how it has changed over the years, consult the Estimates of foreigners (2018 – 2023) and 2024 Population and Housing Census.
In accordance with regulatory requirements, the databases for Temporary Residences and Permanent Residences are linked, since obtaining a Permanent Residence requires previously holding a Temporary Residence.
For a better reading and understanding of the published data, it is recommended to review and apply the current regulations and the metadata available for each set of administrative records, distinguishing between temporary migration (Residencias Temporales) and permanent migration (Residencias Definitivas), according to the validity of each type of permit.
