The Regional Directorates are responsible for the institutional representation of the SERMIG in the region, to encourage the regular status of the migrant population, ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, promoting the development of citizen service initiatives and the promotion of rights and duties of the immigrant community.
The State of Chile has had to establish immigration policies since the beginning of its history as a Republic. The current Servicio Nacional de Migraciones was created in 2021, as a successor of the former Departamento de Extranjería, in order to ensure compliance with current immigration legislation in the country and lead the development of a National Migration Policy.
